Our Team.

My name is Dylan Schatzkamer. I've spent my whole life taking things apart and putting them back together. My father is Mark Shark, aka the Tao of Tunings. He's always been a professional guitar player and I've loved servicing my dads instruments and amps. I build, modify, and service them like a tailor to a suit. I apprenticed repairing guitars and amps with the late Bob Wagstaff, legend in the repair industry at Pier Music in Hermosa Beach CA. Then later on at Rhythm and Notes in Redondo Beach CA. I worked at True Tone Music in Santa Monica CA as a guitar tech with Paul Flynn, and now I work at Portland Music Company in Beaverton OR for the last 4 years as the guitar tech. Every guitar is different and deserves to play at their best. I can help fix it to sound and play in tune no matter the desired pitch, action, etc. I believe in transparency, honesty, good tools and years of experience with them. I am a good person and a great guitar technician.

Restrings

New strings are a good thing. Cleaning the fingerboard of dead skin and smudge. Oiling the board and polishing frets. Polishing the instrument. Checking all electronics and cleaning when needed. New strings put on, stretched and tuned. Check action, intonation, and nut height. Play test. We carry D'Addario strings. In 20 years I have only had 3 bad strings right out of the package, I trust them.

Nut Fabrication

The nut on any instrument needs to be cut to a depth that allows easy playability, whilst avoiding being cut too low that it buzzes against the first fret when played hard. If not cut equidistantly, the string spacing can feel scrunched, or worse, the string falls off the edge of the frets. It is deceivingly difficult for most players to notice one or two high strings causing tuning and intonation instability. Chords will sound out of tune relative to each other. Ever had a nice sounding G major chord, then switch to an E major only to find your G# note 1st fret G string sound quite sharp? Its the nut cut incorrectly or not at all. Bone nuts hand cut and spaced.
